Andy wanted to shift into his bear form and run for the damn mountain, except now his mountain was polluted with her tantalizing scent.

Shit. Shit. Shit! Why?

He was married to that fucking mountain. He loved watching out for nature. Chasing off riffraff. Finding lost hikers, and at the end of the day doing nothing. Walter had been like a grandfather to him. They’d met at one of the many local fishing spots. Andy had watched out for him after his wife passed, and he started spending more and more time out at that rustic cabin.

Andy had done his damnedest to watch the cabin knowing how much he loved it, but he wasn’t exactly Suzie-homemaker either.

His bear perked up as Julie’s scent wafted to them.

He stood with the cooler and tried to ignore the scent of her, but with every movement, a fresh wave hit him.

Nope, not fucking happening. He wanted her like he wanted his next breath. Thank God for this cooler or he’d be sporting some major wood, and he’d never hear the end of it from Ruth, the shop owner. She might have looked small and delicate, but she was one tough lady. Her husband was probably out showing some tourist how to fish, but who really knew? They were the funniest couple this side of Crooked Creek.

“Thank you,” said Julie. “What did you say your name was ma’am?”

Andy damn near purred every time he heard her talk. Shit, he needed to get fresh air and started for the door listening to Ruth prattle.

“Ruth, dear. You need anything you call me. Day or night,” she said.

Andy could hear the tone of Ruth’s voice and knew she was warming up to this little human girl. Not a good sign for him. Ruth, along with every other married woman in the town, would get her married off if they had their way.

A sour churning in his stomach made him pause. He hated the idea of any other man touching her. Any other shifter. No. She was his.

Fuck him. She wasn’t his. But damn it if his bear would agree.

Andy was losing hope of winning his battle. If Ruth approved, Julie would stay. That was just how things went in the old part of town.

And he wouldn’t stand a chance of staying away from her if she was here. She needed to leave.

He needed to leave. He needed a cold shower. No, he needed to bury himself deep within the sexy woman who just turned his world upside down.

Blowing out a breath, he held the door open and waited.

“Okay. Bye, Ruth. Thanks again,” said Julie.

She sauntered past him. Or maybe he just imagined the sauntering.

“Bye, Andy. You be good,” Ruth yelled right before the door closed.

He gritted his teeth. God, he couldn’t stand the idea that he wasn’t in control of his own life, not really. When fate called, you were powerless to turn away. But add in Ruth’s matchmaking prowess and he knew he was a goner. Maybe.

Andy followed Julie before he realized he was really just mesmerized by the sway of her hips.
